One of the spots I visited on my Alberta Rockies trip earlier this month was Moraine Lake. This lake is one of the most photographed tourist attractions in Canada, so I found it particularly challenging to come up with a unique composition. Also, since I got there right before sunset and was exhausted from a big hike I’d done earlier that day, I didn't have time or energy to explore much; so I had to go to the usual spot where most people go to view and photograph the lake - this did not make it any easier to come up with something different. Once I got to the lookout area, I took my sweet time to walk around, trying out a bunch of different camera positions at a bunch of different spots, really trying extra hard to tweak the composition. Finally, I settled on what you see here, taking the gamble that some cool clouds would move into position in the empty patch of sky I’d left in the top of the frame. It seems Mother Nature obliged me that evening, since this awesome group of cloud tendrils blew right over top of the peaks, making for a very dramatic sky. Even though this happened a bit before actual sunset (and there wasn’t much of a colour display at sunset anyways), it was enough to make for a nice overall composition. Enjoy! Landscape comprises the visible features of an area of land, including the physical elements of landforms such as (ice-capped) mountains, hills, water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds and the sea, living elements of land cover including indigenous vegetation, human elements including different forms of land use, buildings and structures, and transitory elements such as lighting and weather conditions.
Combining both their physical origins and the cultural overlay of human presence, often created over millennia, landscapes reflect the living synthesis of people and place vital to local and national identity. Landscapes, their character and quality, help define the self-image of a region, its sense of place that differentiates it from other regions. It is the dynamic backdrop to people’s lives.
The Earth has a vast range of landscapes including the icy landscapes of polar regions, mountainous landscapes, vast arid desert landscapes, islands and coastal landscapes, densely forested or wooded landscapes including past boreal forests and tropical rainforests, and agricultural landscapes of temperate and tropical regions.
Landscape may be further reviewed under the following specific categories: landscape art, cultural landscape, landscape ecology, landscape planning, landscape assessment and landscape design. The activity that modifies the visible features of an area of land is named Landscaping.
