Update of an older shot. I am prepping this shot for a print, and decided to rework it from the ground up to bring it up to date, more in line with my current processing. Come follow me on facebook and Flickr I also have a website. The sun sets on Makaiwa Bay near Muana Lani on the big island of Hawaii. The kona side of Hawai'i has a unique phenomenon because of VOG, or fog created from the volcanic fumes that spew from the volcanic activity further south on the island. Even with a mostly clear sky, it creates a unique glow during sunset that you don't typically see elsewhere. The brush in the foreground is called Beach Naupaka, and blooms small 'half' flowers all over. Hawaiian folklore says the flowers signify lovers that have been torn apart, never to be reunited. Tragic. A solitary Heliotrope tree grows from the brush on the shores edge. I kept the lovers company as the sun set, assuring them they would see another day. :)

Landscapes, their character and quality, help define the self-image of a region, its sense of place that differentiates it from other regions. It is the dynamic backdrop to people’s lives.

The Earth has a vast range of landscapes including the icy landscapes of polar regions, mountainous landscapes, vast arid desert landscapes, islands and coastal landscapes, densely forested or wooded landscapes including past boreal forests and tropical rainforests, and agricultural landscapes of temperate and tropical regions.
